Abstract
According to the very text of the Qur'an, the Prophet (PBUH) is introduced as the paragon for the believers, and thus it is essential for every Muslim to follow him. Following calls for being acquainted and the best source of acquaintance is the Qur’an, but since the verses of the Qur’an concerning the personality of the Prophet (PBUH) lead to different perceptions and interpretations in some cases, the Shiites and the Sunnis have each offered a different interpretation of his personality in compliance with their own intellectual and religious fundamentals. Using the descriptive-analytical method, the present article compares the views of Tabari, a Sunni commentator and the author of Jāmi‘ al-Bayān, with those of Tabarsi, a Shiite commentator and the author of Majma‘ al-Bayān, and answers the question of what explanation the two commentators have provided about the individual personality of the Prophet (PBUH). In order to find the answer, some indicators were defined in the first place and according to those indicators, the verses regarding the Prophet (PBUH) were studied in terms of 8 components: infallibility, asceticism, austerity, moderation, patience, servitude, sincerity, and trust in God. After examining the verses collected with the aforementioned components, it was concluded that the discord between Tabarsi and Tabari in introducing the individual personality of the Messenger of God (PBUH) pertains largely to theological foundations and issues, including the subject of infallibility in particular. As a result, some indicative and methodological fundamentals, such as being content with the appearance of verses in rereading them, have caused discrepancies in interpretations and perceptions of the character of the Prophet (PBUH).
