Accessing Intended Meaning in Quranic Verses Requires Moving Beyond the Lexical Meaning of Individual Quranic Words and Paying Attention to Evidences—including Context (Siyāq). Although the Qur’an has long been used to understand its own vocabulary by scholars and exegetes, the absence of a systematic method for extracting the intended meaning of Quranic lexical items remains a major challenge in contemporary lexical research.
This study, using a descriptive–analytic method, seeks to answer the question: How can semantic components of a word be discovered by relying on siyāq (context)? The findings indicate that, in uncovering the Qur’anic meanings of words, three kinds of siyāq must be taken into account, which can provide researchers with a three-step model:
Employ the context of the verse and the co-occurring words (collocations).
Characterize the word through the phrase that immediately follows it in the verse.
Conduct a topic-based examination of that word across the entire Qur’an.
Accordingly, the article emphasizes the necessity of drawing on all three types of siyāq in order to identify the specific Qur’anic meaning of a word—meanings that often offer the researcher a novel and distinct sense. It is through this process that more accurate and more reliable interpretation of Qur’anic words can be achieved.
