The Quranic verses are of two kinds: Muhkam (clear and definite) and Mutashabeh (ambiguous), as the Quran says in chapter "Al-e Imran" verse seven. Based on this division some verses refer to the meaning explicitly and others implicitly. Some chapters include letters in the first verses as mysterious letters, scholars have included these letters as ambiguous verse and some others deny. Allamah Tabatabaei and Mesbah Yazdi, accordingly, do not have a common approach to mysterious letters. This paper attempts to examine their view. For Mesbah Yazdi, Quranic verses are divided into two types: Muhkam and Mutashabeh. Allamah Tabatabaei believes that Quranic verses are not just two types. He indicates that Mujmal, Mobayyen, Muhkam and Mutashabeh are some kinds of verses. He considers mysterious letters as Mojmal but for Mesbah Yazdi they are Mutashbeh.
