Abstract
Among the significant concepts of the Holy Qur'an regarding family relations of the believers are the concepts of “Vālid” and “Vālidah”. These two concepts are mentioned six times in five Sūrahs. In addition, they are mentioned once in the feminine plural form of “Vālidāt” and 20 times in the dual form of “Vālidayn” in different Makkī and Madanī Sūrahs. The general perception of the commentators is that the concept of “Vālid” is the father and “Vālidah” is the mother. The present article, using the descriptive-analytical method, and studying the uses of “Vālid” in Arabic culture and the Holy Qur'an with a thematic view, seeks to examine the semantic changes of this word. The findings of the research indicate that both concepts of “Vālid” and “Vālidah” in the Qur'an mean mother, with the distinction that the former concept is used when attributing a child to the mother, and the latter is used for the mother considering the verb ‘to give birth’, but it is applied to the father only in cases of dual form and following Taghlīb rule. The result is that in the interpretation of the Qur'an, firstly, it should be avoided to interpret words with their well-known meanings established in minds, and they should be interpreted with their meanings in their Revelation era, and secondly, it is permissible to interpret the words of the Qur'an with multiple meanings provided that they are accompanied by linguistic evidence.
