Jarī and Tatbīq” (Application and Correspondence) are key concepts in understanding the supra-historical nature of the Quran. In exegetical literature, these terms often overlap with concepts such as Baṭn (inner meaning), Ta’wīl (esoteric interpretation), and the legal principle of al-ʿibra bi-ʿumūm al-lafẓ (the validity of general wording), which has led to ambiguity regarding their epistemological status. This study aims to identify the types of conceptual overlaps, trace their origins, and propose a resolution framework. Using a library-based research methodology, the data were analyzed through a critical examination of various exegetical works and the traditions (hadiths) of the Infallible Imams (PBUH). The findings reveal that this conceptual confusion stems from two main factors: first, a specific interpretation of the Imams’ traditions, which erroneously implies that they intended to establish an independent field of knowledge called “Jarī and Tatbīq,” whereas their primary objective was to impart the epistemological methodology for demonstrating the supra-historical nature and continuity of Divine intent. Second, the misguided attempt to place this field on the same level as conventional exegesis (tafsīr). The study concludes that the resolution lies in re-evaluating the actual position of “Jarī and Tatbīq” based on the Imams’ traditions—recognizing it as an integral part of the Quranic understanding process that reveals the continuity of Divine intent.
